"Radio news is bearable. This is due to the fact that while the news is being broadcast the disc jockey is not allowed to talk." Fran Lebowitz
|
Radio stations which used to operate on shortwave played short identification tunes, known as interval signals, before their programmes started. They did this for a few reasons:
- Because the radios of old didn't have very accurate tuning scales, it helped listeners to make sure that they had the right station.
- It informed other stations that the frequency was in use.
- As most stations broadcast programmes in various languages it allowed listeners, even if they didn't understand the language, to know what station they were listening to.
Unfortunately many of the stations have now disappeared from shortwave, and alas more disappear each month :-(
Below are some of these interval signals - just click the station name to listen on your computer's mp3 player, and have a reminisce, or perhaps a first listen :-)
